The chords, melody and lyrics for Write My name In Stars are Jamie's. Written on keyboard rather than guitar, the melody came by singing nonsensical words over the chords - the following day he played this rough demo to Evelyn who suggested keeping the lyrics as sung. In fact only one word was altered - though we did change the perspective from which the song was sung - (originally the chorus had been 'I will write your name in stars, I think I owe you something for all those tears and all those scars') It's an intensely emotional song about falling in love with the wrong person and we wanted to maintain the claustrophobic and oppressive feel. .
Jamie's suffered from mild tinitus for years and tends to filter it out when working, but on this occasion he decided to incorporate the noises in his head into the background of the song - though it took Eve's technologial know-how to re-create the sounds and put the loop together.
The demo we took up to the Goat Shed was unlike anything else we'd ever written - Andy thought we'd lost it completely! We left it with him for a week and when we went back he said he thought it the best thing we'd ever done. He'd really picked up on what we were trying to do and had produced an amazing track. 'Stars' completely changed the way we thought about songwriting - and the way we went about doing it.
lyrics
All the love I ever wanted
Who’d have thought I’d find it here
Something I would never dream
All the love I feel for you
Takes pity on me
Takes pity on you
And I feel you
I feel you coming down
Now I feel you
I feel you coming down
Write my name in stars, write my name in stars
Don’t you think you owe me something for all these tears and all these scars?
Write my name in stars, write my name in stars
Don’t you think you owe me something for all these tears and all these scars?
All the words I’ve ever followed
They all lead back to you
All the stars I’ve ever watched out in the night
See them bleed into you.
Cos I feel you
I feel you coming down
Now I feel you
I feel you coming down
Write my name in stars, write my name in stars
Don’t you think you owe me something for all these tears and all these scars?
Write my name in stars, write my name in stars
Don’t you think you owe me something for all these tears and all these scars?
