Jamie came up with the chord sequence and the melody for the first four lines, Evelyn added the melody for the latter two. The lyrics were a combined effort.
It’s basically a simple minor blues. We went straight up to the Goat Shed to record it the same evening we wrote it. The cello sound that underlies the song is actually an electric bass played with a violin bow. We loved the atmosphere of the recording we got that evening - and apart from Evelyn adding the harmonies - nothing was altered. The band took their name from this song.
lyrics
I am desire
That burns within like fire
I never tire
I am desire
With one look I can change the world
With one look, I am the mocking girl
I am the flame
The shadow over your name
Never the same
I am the flame
With one look, the world spins a different way
With one look, you're always in yesterday.
I am the sin
Carried on the wind
Breathing me in
I am the sin
With one look you need me to make you whole.
With one look, I know your heart and soul.
I am the sea
Deepest mystery
Come unto me
I am the sea
With one look I am your darkest wish
With one look I am your mermaid kiss.
