Over the course of the last few years, Evelyn and Jamie have been working on a fantasy novel set in a place called Etarlis. Soundchaser is one of the beasts that roams that land. The genesis of this song was a journey home after a trip to Harlech in June 2002 to do some stills in preparation for the video which we made for the song ‘Hand In Hand’ which, in the end, didn’t make it onto the album. On the journey home that day Evelyn fell asleep in the passenger seat and pulling up at some traffic lights, Jamie heard the perfect sound of her breathing - and had the notion that something like that might be desirable (anything perfect always is.) It was another half year or more before he sat down at the keyboard and wrote the verse for the song, and Evelyn then wrote the melody for the chorus. Musically, lyrically and conceptually, it’s a very unusual piece.
lyrics
See, here I come in the hours you’re sleeping
Round the edges of dreams you’ll find me creeping
Inside your head, for the echoes of lives you’ve led,
But I take my time
I’m searching for sounds in the heat of the night
The soft cries of love, the screams of fright
I will take them away, silence the dawn of day
But I take my time
And the Soundchaser will come
Drawn by the aching within my heart
And I’m there for you, there for you, taking your cares for you,
There for you, stealing the sound of your breath from you now...
I travel the night on a wave of words
The secrets, the lies, the whispers half heard
Whatever they be, they will set me free
But I take my time.....
And the Soundchaser will come
Drawn by the aching within your heart
And I’m there for you, there for you, taking your cares for you,
There for you, stealing the sound of your breath from you now...
Silent as shadow as swift as sin
I’ve come for the words you speak and sing
There’s nowhere to hide, I am at your side
And I take your time......
