Whisper was the final song to be written for the album. With three days to go before the deadline we’d set ourselves (otherwise we would have just kept on writing new songs and replacing older ones ad infinitum) we decided to drop a song called ‘42’. We really were running on empty by then having spent long days in the studio. For inspiration Jamie turned to Etarlis and picked on a moment when two friends find themselves in a river - one floats downstream, but the other mysteriously floats upstream. The atmosphere of this song is particularly Etarlan! The song is simply one chord, Aminor (we were far too tired to even think about a second) with the melody sung over it - there is a wonderfully powerful moment when Evelyn sing/speaks the word ‘falling’ in harmony. Shivery. The atmosphere of the piece is down to Andy who worked miracles on this recording. Considering the way it came about, Whisper is a song we’re particularly fond of.
lyrics
Lost in the dark rising mountains
I wander blind to their sound
Follow the words that you taught me
Keep your ear close to the ground
I hear them whisper my name
I hear them whisper my name
Lost in the art of the forest
I’m falling under its spell
Talking in tongues of the ancients
Listening to stories they tell
Lost in the tangle of rivers
I’m floating gently upstream
Drawn by the sound of your crying
Drawn by the sound of your screams
I hear you whisper my name
I hear you whisper my name
